Walk into any room with silence and confidence

Frequent coughing and coughing “attacks”, and constant throat clearing are often due to a respiratory condition. Some patients will benefit from speech pathology input to identify other factors that might cause throat irritation.

These factors can include:

  • GORD (gastro-oesophageal reflux disorder)
  • Environmental Irritants (e.g., dust, smoke)
  • Aspiration of food/fluid
  • Vocal cord dysfunction, in particular Paradoxical Vocal Fold Motion (PVFM)

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, enquire today to

What we do

Help you understand what triggers your cough

Teach you ways to reduce coughing

Teach you ways to keep your vocal folds (voice) healthy

Most clients are discharged after 4 treatment sessions or less.

Gain better control over your cough with behavioural cough therapy

Behavioural cough therapy seeks to improve the client’s voluntary control over their cough. You might feel you have already exhausted medical treatment following multiple interventions, and are seeking a treatment adjunct or alternative.

If you have not been reviewed by a medical specialist (ENT specialist and Respiratory physician) in the last 6 months, we will recommend that you do.

We offer evidence-based treatments

Evidence for the success of speech pathology intervention for patients with chronic cough is strong. Clients can improve their quality of life, reduce coughing, reduce cough reflex sensitivity and reduce the urge to cough.

A selection of peer-reviewed journals:

  • Vertigan A, Theodoros D, Gibson PG, Winkworth A. Efficacy of speech pathology management for chronic cough: a randomised placebo controlled trial of treatment efficacy. Thorax. 2006;61(12):1065-9

  • Ryan N, Vertigan A, Gibson P. Chronic Cough and laryngeal dysfunction improve with specific treatment of cough and paradoxical vocal fold movement. Cough. 2009;5:4.

  • Ryan N, Gibson P. Cough reflex hypersensitivity improves with speech language pathology management of refactory chronic cough. Cough. 2010;6(1):1-8
